40 Sucks!

I recently created a fun birthday gift for a friend of mine who just turned 40.

I started with a flower pot
3 bags of Tootsie Pop suckers
Styrofoam ball
adhesive backed fabric
Tissue Paper
and some black glittery accents from the floral department.

I started by decorating the flower pot.  You could pick up a simple plain flower pot at a dollar store.  I got the black one in the photo above at a local discount retailer.

First I cut the lettering for the words
40 sucks
For the actual number 40 I used a font that has a shadow cut so that I could layer white over the red background/shadow cut.  Since I was using a "fancy" font for the numbers I thought it would be a nice accent to have the red coming through.

I started by centering the word sucks on the pot
Then I added the red numbers 40

Then I layered the white numbers over the red.  Since the product I am using is repositional, like a Post It note, if I did not like the way it looked I could just take it off and line it up again until I got the look I wanted.

Next I added some green tissue paper inside of the flower pot to help fill up the space, and hide the bottom of the styrofoam ball.

Then I set the styrofoam ball in place and "fluffed" the tissue paper up around it.

Not it is time to rip open those bags of Tootsie Pops!
I actually counted out exactly 40 Tootsie Pops for this project since it was for a 40th birthday.

I started at the top of the styrofoam ball, placing the Tootsie Pops close to each other so that I would not have large gaps between them.

Just keep going. working around the ball and filling in the spaces.

Now, because of the size of the styrofoam ball and the number of pops I was using, once I got down close to the bottom of the ball, top of the flower pot I did feel like there was some "open" space where you could see the styrofoam ball.  To fix this I took more tissue paper, cut it into squares (about 3" squares).  Then I grabbed those squares in the center and bunched the tissue paper together, stuck a straight pin through the bottom and pinned it to the styrofoam ball in any places that I felt looked a little bare.

And now for the finished project . . .

This was REALLY easy to make.  I actually did it while I was watching television the night before the birthday party.  The great thing is that once the Tootsie Pops are gone, the Birthday Girl can actually use the flower pot . . . since the letters are repositionable she could remove them so that she is just left with a pretty flower pot.

I hope you liked this project!  I had a lot of fun making it!

  1. That was great! My Hubby turns 50 this year and I know exactly what I'm gonna do!!!!! He's a private person, but this will be a 'calm' present.

Thanks so much for the idea.....
