Using the Negative Space

We have all cut images, words or letters with our die cutting machines to use as embellishments on our projects. But what about using the negative space that is created in the paper itself from that cut? Here is what I mean.

Below you can see the words How Old? and Add Another Candle that I cut on my Cricut

And here is how the negative space looks on the piece of cardstock that I cut those words from.  I had to glue the centers of the letter o's, l and d back into the negative space, but you can see how now I can create 2 cards from one cut . . . use the words (in the image above) for one card and the negative space for the card in the image below.  NOTHING went to waste!  

I layered this cardstock on top of a blank pre-made card and then embellished it with candles cut from rhinestone sticker sheets from The Buckle Boutique.  Since the candles for this card a relatively small I was able to use scraps from other projects to make them.  Again . . . not letting anything go to waste.

To top off the candles I cut the flame shape from Rowlux Illusion Film.  It does not show up well in this photo, but the product has ridges and a pattern right in it, and it really lends itself well to the movement of the flame of a candle.
