Disney Pixar Blog Hop - June 7th - Rhinestone Mickey

Welcome to the first day of the Disney Pixar Blog Hop!

It has been so long since we have done one of these hops, that to make up for it we are going to keep the fun going ALL MONTH LONG!  You heard me right . . . each Saturday in June we will have a new line up of crafters joining us to show you their best Disney Pixar projects.

For my first project, I am going to show you how I created a Mickey Mouse wall decor piece using the Cork Stack from DCWV.  Below is the DCWV logo that I created with rhinestone sticker sheets from The Buckle Boutique.  If you would like to see that project tutorial, you can click HERE.

Okay . . . on to the Mickey Mouse project!  I used a piece of printed cork with a beautiful flourish pattern on it.  I cut a Mickey Mouse icon out of the cork to fill the entire 12" x 12" sheet and I also cut it out of a piece of cardboard.  Since the cork has adhesive on the back, I was able to peel off the backing and simply stick it to the cardboard to give it a little more strength.

I then created a frame by drawing the outline of the Mickey Mouse icon and then offsetting a line both 3/8" to the inside of the outline and 3/8" to the outside of the outline.  My original plan was to create this frame cut with the Gypsy so I could cut this on my Cricut . . . but my Gypsy and I have been having some issues so I just did this by hand.

Okay, now I have a frame.  I placed that frame on the back of a sheet of rhinestone stickers from The Buckle Boutique.  I love that I can just put the frame down on the back of the sheet and not worry about where the edges hit on the rhinestones . . . since these "gems" are a soft material that can be cut through with a scissors, craft knife or a die cutting machine I just have to pick my shape and cut!

Then I cut around the image using my craft knife t and my Westcott Non-Stick scissors.  Here is how the whole shape looked.  If you look close, you can see the line where I cut the inside edge of the frame in the photo below.

And here is what was left over when I removed the "frame" part.  I will have to think of another project to use this large Mickey Mouse icon for.

Now to add the frame to the cork shape.  I peeled off the backing of the rhinestone sticker sheet frame in small sections so that I could line things up and kind of "tack it" in areas before peeling off ALL of the backing.

Doing it is small sections helped me keep the overall piece lined up and not have to deal with trying to adjust it later, since the adhesive is REALLY sticky and would not be fun to peel up and reposition.

And here is how the piece looked once the frame was attached!

And here is how it looks on the wall of my craft room next to a couple of Mickey Mouse canvas prints I have had for a couple of years.
