I am also sharing this project with the All About Babies Blog Hop!
I am also entering this project into the CutItUpChallenges.blogspot Challenge for the Labor Day Theme.
I cannot wait to show you what I created
I have a co-worker who is pregnant and she decorated the nursery in The Lorax theme
I wanted to give her a baby gift that played off of this theme. I have made diaper cakes before, and I even have a full tutorial on building one that you can read HERE, but for today we are going to jump right to my favorite part of a diaper cake . . . decorating it!
I usually use some sort of ribbon to hide the rubber bands and strings that are holding the diaper cake together, but for this one I decided to use an adhesive backed fabric that I have. It is nice because it is not a permanate adhesive, so I did not have to worry about it sticking to the diapers and runing them . . . I want them to be able to use these diapers.
Since it only comes in 18" lengths I had to cut a few strips and sew them together.
Once sewn, I mitered the corners
so then when I removed the backing to expose the adhesive I could open up the seam and it stayed open nice
Then I just started to wrap it around the layers of the diaper cake, placing it so it covered the rubber bands and string holding everything together.
Here is what it looked like when all of the layers were covered.
Next I wanted to make some roses out of baby wash cloths. I stared by folding them as shown below, bringing the two sides into the center
Then I folded that in half
You are going to want the center fold to be the top of your roses. Take one corner and fold it in slightly, and then just start rolling the wash cloth up like a cinnamon roll.
I wrapped a rubber band around the end of the roll to hold it together.
The picture below shows how the finished rose looks from the front.
Now it is time to REALLY bring on the bling!
I used the Lime Green Dazzling Diamonds from The Buckle Boutique and cut the word baby from the Simply Sweet Cricut Cartridge. Dazzling Diamonds are SO EASY to cut with your die cutting machine because the 3mm “stones” are actually a gel or soft resin substance, they can be cut in half.
For information on the cutting settings for your Cricut you can go HERE.
I cut two shadow cuts for the word baby in yellow cardstock. One was used to layer the Dazzling Diamonds on, and then I glued a craft stick to the back, and used the second yellow cardstock cut to "sandwich" the stick in the middle to hide it.
Then I cut several swirls from the Mickey and Friends Cricut Cartridge. This swirl can be found on the icon feature on the page with Goofy walking
I cut yellow and green cardstock with the shadow cut above, and then green and yellow Dazzling Diamonds from the Icon with the shift button pressed
I had some orange, yellow and green ribbon that I wrapped around the center tier of the cake, and then I made a bow by just looping the ribbon and doing a little stitch in the center to hold it all together.
(do you see The Lorax themed colors?)
To hide where I stitched the ribbon together to make the bow, I sewed on a little green button.
I always like to use baby spoons on my diaper cakes standing up with the handles stuck down between the diapers. I think that they look like the candles on the cake. I was so happy went I found this set of spoons that matched the color theme for the cake!
Gifts like these are so fun for me to make. It includes things that the new parents can use, like the diapers, spoons and wash cloths, but it also allows me to be creative and crafty when decorating the cake.
I think that the Dazzling Diamonds add just the right touch of sparkle to this cake. And if the parents want to they can use the embellishments from the cake in a scrapbook or bedroom decoration.
