Real life gets in the way of my crafting life!

I know it appears as if I have been busy crafting, but all of the post you have seen in the past week or more were things that I created early in July, while I was still laid off.  Then "real life" got in the way of my crafting life.

We found out that my Grandfather, who just turned 91 years old, has cancer in his throat.  It was looking pretty bad for a while there, but now he is out of the hospital and doing some radiation treatments.  But during the time he was REALLY bad that was all I could think about.

Then, the middle of last week I got a call that I had been offered a job . . . it is a contract position, so it might be 3 months (maybe 6 months) but at least it is some more money coming in for now.  So when I found out that I would be going back to work I had to get a lot of stuff around the house done that was on my "to do list" for the time I was laid off and I because I wanted to get some of that stuff done, crafting was neglected.

Now I have been working for a week.  Back to getting up early, and being to tired to craft when I get home from work (with a MUCH longer drive time than I used to have)  I did watch Craft Wars this week . . . that was as close as I got to crafting.

I am hoping to get into a groove with my new schedule so that I can find time to create again.

Decorative bowl

I was walking through Target the other day, and they had a bunch of their summer items on sale . . . the bright colorful plates, cups, bowls and containers. None of the bright colors really were anything I liked . . . which could be why they did not sell that many of them and had SO MANY on clearance . . . but they DID have a few plain white bowls.

Plain . . . Boring . . . OR a blank canvas!

I grabbed the vinyl I had from My Hobby Vinyl and went to my Cricut and cut out the letters to spell my maiden name . . . my mother always has cute bowl on the counter with candy or something in it, so I thought it would give it to her.

After I put the letters on it needed something more, so I added the butterfly with the swirl coming off of it, which is a cut from the Cricut Storybook Cartridge using the Border Feature button for this cartridge.

How did I get a mirror image of that cut for the other side of the name?

Well, I learned how to do THAT from watching my Cricut A to Z DVD from Above Rubies Studio.  I have had my Cricut Expression for almost a year now, and I had NEVER USED this feature!  It was not that it was hard to do . . . I think that part of the reason was that I just never saw a need for it . . . until I watched the DVD and Megan showed me how she used it and how it could open up more ways for me to be creative.

So, if you want to get the Cricut A to Z DVD click HERE.

Digital scrapbooking - book covers

Recently I told you about a Father's Day book I did with pictures of my daughter using the My Memories digital scrapbooking software.  It was great because I was able to create one book and then print it out for my husband, my father-in-law, my father and my grandfather, and I had a GREAT gift for all of them.  Here is the front and back cover from that book.

and here is the back cover for the book

I used the same main background paper for the front and the back of the book to give it a consistent look.  Since it was a Father's Day gift I wanted to make sure that I used papers and embellishments that were not too "girly" . . . the teal paper with the embossed pattern on it really pulled out the teal veins in the main background paper, and then those accents went perfect with the whole thing!

One thing I really like is that there are free kits that you can download.  I check the My Memories site every few weeks to see what new items have been added to the Free section and download anything that I like.  If I am not using it for a project NOW I might use it later, and you might as well get it while it is free.

Would you like to give digital scrapbooking a try?
If you use the code

STMMMS69390

you can get $10 off the My Memories software!
Just go to MyMemories.com to download the software and then you can start looking at the free kits and papers so that you can create your own digital scrapbooks too.

Birthday wishes

I saw a card sketch on Pinterest and knew I wanted to use it . . . it looked like a quick and easy card and something I could do using up my scraps of paper.  I cut a few 1 1/2" squares and then just rounded SOME of the corners.  I embossed the solid colors to give them more depth.

Here is a secret . . . I totally messed up on the smallest butterfly!  I had inked the edges of the butterfly and it was still wet when I glued it down and some of the ink got on my card!  I was so upset with myself!  So to "fix" it I just cut two more squares, the same color as the background paper, inked the edges of those and added one to cover my mistake and the other to make it look like that was my intended layout all along!

I made the butterflies wings pop off the page, which is not something I usually do.  I normally glue everything down flat so that I can put it in an envelope, but the butterflies were just asking to fly so I had to.  I finished it off with the Birthday Wishes sentiment from the Above Rubies Studio stamp set.

I think that this project also shows that crafting is a process and you have to go with it and not fight it.  Don't look at things as a "mistake" . . . look at it as an opportunity for more creativity!

Thanks SEW much!

I have been sewing since I was about 10 years old. I think that is the reason that I am always attracted to things with a sewing theme. I was so happy when this new stamp set came out from K Andrew Designs . . . Sew Much Fun
Here is a preview of the stamp set

And here is a thank you card that I created using the phrase Thanks Sew Much . . . and then I added the image of the needle with the thread off to the side.

My Memories Digital Scrapbooking

I used the MyMemories.com software to create several books recently . . . a yearbook for my daughter's hockey team, a memorial scrapbook for a family that lost a child, and a Father's Day gift book with pictures of my daughter . . . and I really love how easy it is to use!  I created the entire scrapbook in just a couple of days, or with the example of the team yearbook I was able to mass produce the books so each girl could have their own.

One thing I really like is that there are free kits that you can download.  I check the My Memories site every few weeks to see what new items have been added to the Free section and download anything that I like.  If I am not using it for a project NOW I might use it later, and you might as well get it while it is free.

The Best Gift

I am FINALLY getting around to scrapbooking some photos from Christmas (don't laugh)

The best gift we could have gotten our son for Christmas was a cell phone . . . I think he was a little shocked when he opened the gift, because he looked at it for a while as if he was thinking "Is this REALLY for me?"

I cut the penguin from the Christmas Cheer Cricut cartridge.  I found some fun polka dot papers in different colors to use for the hats.

I used the K Andrew Designs Winter Wishes stamp set on this layout.  Since it is a mix and match stamp set I have the freedom to combine any of the words into my OWN phrases.

Where do YOU find inspiration?

I was thinking about this the other day . . . all of the different places that I go for inspiration for my crafting projects.

We look at what others create.  Now, that USED to mean looking at other people's scrapbooks at crops, or the cards they sent us in the mail, but now thanks to the internet, message boards, blogs, Facebook and Pinterest we can sit in our pajama's drinking coffee and spend hours (yes, sometimes way TOO MUCH time) looking at what others have created to inspire our own crafting projects.

Page Maps and Sketches are another source of inspiration for me.  I love how they give you a basic guide or idea of how to lay things out, and then YOU get to add your own personal touch with the colors and patterns you choose.  Here is an example of a Page Map.

See how they show you a completed scrapbook layout in the main image, but in the upper right hand corner there is a smaller sketch style image that breaks the layout down to it's basic shapes and pieces.  Below is a scrapbook layout that I created after looking at this Page Map.

Not "exactly" the same as the Page Map, but you can see where the inspiration came from.

Another place that I find inspiration is from magazines, watching crafting shows and DVD's.  Above Rubies Studio has some GREAT DVD's!
I have been watching some of the ones for stamping and for the Cricut . . . and even one for the Imagine . . . and I don't even OWN an Imagine!  Why would I watch a DVD for a machine I don't own?  For the ideas and inspiration of course!  I skip over the sections about how to set up the Imagine and go RIGHT TO the projects!
I have a notepad where I will take notes on each project Megan demonstrates and draw a little sketch of the finished project so I can use them for inspiration.  Like I said, since I don't own an Imagine I cannot cut and print the exact same project she creates, but I can use her ideas as inspiration . . . maybe using similar colors, shapes or overall layout.
Here is a card I made after watching the 1 2 3 Stamp DVD

When I first saw the technique that Megan used on the DVD I thought "sure, she makes it look so easy" and I thought that my project would never come out that good . . . but I was wrong!  It was so easy I know I will be using this tip again! What was the tip?  If I told you THAT you won't need Megan's DVD!  It is less than $15 at her store . . . and this is just ONE of the things you will learn.

We can also find inspiration in everyday things.  Take this for example

I see a fun pattern for the background of a card.  Or use one column from this as a border for a scrapbook.  Want to know what it REALLY is?  My shower curtain!

Or how about this . . .

When I first saw this pattern I thought "I HAVE to use that pattern on a project!!!!"  It could even be a good way to use up some scraps . . . can anyone else see changing each one of those teardrop shapes into a heart and then using that as a pattern on a card?  Want to know what it REALLY is?  It is the pattern on the outside of a box of tissues!  Not even a "decorator" style box . . . just the ordinary every day (probably in a 6 pack from Sam's Club) box of Puffs tissues!

I hope you see my point . . . inspiration can come from ANYWHERE!  You just have to be willing to open your eyes to it!

Happy Crafting!

Labeling my scrapbooks

When I first purchased my scrapbooks I thought it would look nice to have them all be the same color.  But as my collection of scrapbooks grew I soon learned that it was hard to know what book was for what year.

So the other day I decided to use the vinyl I had from My Hobby Vinyl to label my scrapbooks.  I cut the numbers for the years at 1" from the Plantin Schoolbook Cricut cartridge.

If you are thinking of trying a vinyl project I recommend using My Hobby Vinyl.  It cuts so nice and clean, and is easy to transfer to your project.  You can check out their Facebook page HERE.

Enjoy The Moments Blog Hop

Thank you for joining us for the Enjoy the Moments Blog Hop!

Recently I mentioned that I am watching the Cricut Cards for any Occasion DVD by Megan Elizabeth of Above Rubies Studio.  Megan is such a great teacher!

With Megan's DVD's I love that while she is showing you how to create the projects she is also giving you little tips and hints on how to do things . . . even if you don't make the exact same project that she does you will learn some new tips and tricks you can use for other crafting projects!  So not only am I learning how to make some fabulous cards, I am also getting great tips from Megan along the way.  Look at the birthday card I made for my sister-in-law after watching this DVD . .

The cupcake is from the Sweet Treats Cricut cartridge.  I used my D'vine Swirls Cuttlebug folder to give some more depth to the frosting on the cupcake.  I even used Megan's Happy Birthday stamp set for the sentiments.  On the outside I used the "Make a Wish!" and "Blow out the Candles!" stamps.  Inside I stamped "Have a Fabulous Birthday!"

If you would like to purchase this stamp set, or the Cricut Cards DVD go HERE
If you are on Pinterest you can follow the boards for all of Megan's products for even more inspiration by clicking HERE. And don't forget to go to Megan's blog to read her BIG ANNOUNCEMENT for today!

Florida

A few years ago I took a trip to Florida for a conference . . . it was right around Thanksgiving time . . . for me (a Minnesota girl) it was crazy to wearing shorts and sitting by a pool around the holidays!  I captured a few pictures of the BEAUTIFUL view we had of the waterway next to our hotel.

Since I wanted the beauty of the sunset to be the main focus in this layout I did not add a lot with embellishments.  I actually used scraps of paper from my stash in warm colors.

Thank you Diana!

I just had to throw out a BIG THANK YOU to my Design Team Sister Diana from Leelee Card Designs.

Recently Diana was experiencing problems when trying to use our site MyCutSearch.com to find the images from her Cricut cartridges.  She reached out to me for a solution, and I had her try all of the "typical" things for troubleshooting known issues that we have listed on our Troubleshooting Page.

When those did not resolve the issue she had I had to contact our Head of Internet Technology . . . aka: my husband Jeff!  He is the one that actually understands all of that computer "blah, blah, blah" stuff . . . I am the one that just says "I want a button here that when you click on it, it does this . . . can you make that happen?"  :)

Anyway, Jeff had Diana try a few things and we are VERY happy that she was patient enough to go back and forth with us via email trying a few things to help Jeff to figure out the problem, and more importantly find a solution to the problem so that she could use MyCutSearch.com again!

Diana posted a GREAT testimonial about our customer service on her blog at Leelee Card Designs.  Click HERE if you would like to read what she wrote.

We are so happy that so many people love our site!  Remember, MyCutSearch.com is a free site that is operated by one family . . . no big corporate sponsorship going on here . . . but we do accept donations to help keep the site up and running for everyone to use!

Thanks,
The staff at MyCutSearch.com/Landslide Solutions LLC

Personalized towel

When my husband and I got married, someone got us personalized towels for the bathroom.  Since our oldest child was 5 years old at the time, they also had one made for him.  My daughter recently asked why she was the ONLY ONE in the family that did NOT have a towel with her name on it . . . well honey, you were not around when they were given to us as a gift.

But since I have a sewing machine that can do machine embroidery she asked if I could make her one of her own . . . and here it is . . .

This is an easy way to make something very personal for someone.

Giving new life to an old bulletin board

I wanted to add a bulletin board to my craft room so I could pin project ideas and inspiration to it, and I found this old bulletin board in our storage room.

Pretty boring, right?  I decided to paint the wood black.
First I taped off the cork because I KNOW I am a messy painter!

Then I went over the black with a iridescent paint to add a shimmer to it.

It does not show up very well in the photos, but in real life it has a really glossy finish and the black looks like a fresh wet paint even when it dried.

And here is how it looks in my craft room!
I found the cute Mickey Mouse on canvas artwork at the store . . . on sale!

Dude . . . I love this card

I had an assistant in my craft room the other day. Beth wanted to make some thank you cards for people, and of course they ended up being Disney themed!

The phrase "Dude, you're totally awesome!" is from the Animated Greeting stamp set by Pink By Design.

Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July!  I hope that you are having a wonderful day!  It is a HOT one here . . . which means a good day for staying inside and scrapbooking!

I wanted to share a page that I created for a Memorial Scrapbook.  My children went to the same daycare as a family that lost the father to cancer . . . the girls were just 5 and 1 1/2 when their father passed away.  Their mother really wanted a scrapbook of memories of their father for them to look back on when they were older but she knew that it would be too emotional of a project for her to do . . . so I created the books for her.

I had an assistant in the craft room

I had an assistant in my craft room the other day.  Beth wanted to make some thank you cards for people, and of course they ended up being Disney themed!

She loves Donald Duck, and she thought that the "My Life is so much better with you in it" sentiment from the K Andrew Positive Thoughts stamp set went perfect for her thank you card and the image of Daisy and Donald hugging.  She loves to use the Cuttlebug, so she wanted to emboss the paper behind Daisy and Donald, which I think was a great idea.

If you are interested in purchasing the Positive Thoughts stamp set, just click on the preview below.

If you already have this set you should follow the Pinterest board for inspiration and examples of projects created with this stamp set.

Simply Sunday - Summer Celebrations

Welcome to Simply Sunday with the Getting Cricky Design Team!

Today is the day that the Getting Cricky Design Team gets to show off some of the projects they have created with the wonderful stamps from K Andrew Designs.  The challenge theme for this week is Summer Celebrations.

For us, summer is time for soccer . . . just yesterday my daughter was playing in a soccer tournament.  They played two games, and my daughter scored a goal in each game.  Our team manager has been so great with keeping things organized that I wanted to make him a card.

The word Thanks that I did in blue is from the phrase "Thanks for noticing me" from the Of Mice and Lil Men stamp set.  Just click on the preview below if you would like to add this stamp set to your collection.

K Andrew Designs

Make sure to stop by Getting Cricky to see what the rest of the Design Team has created, and you can even enter your OWN project into the challenge.

I can't wait to see what you come up with!
