Cake decorating with Cricut

There has been a lot of buzz recently about the new Cricut machine for cake decorating.  I have even done a couple of blogs on the topic that you can read here and here.  This machine will allow anyone that can push a few buttons to decorate cakes like a pro!  Can you imagine . . . no more going to the bakery to get a cake for large events because you want it to look nice.  Just make your own cake and let the Cricut do all of the hard work.

I found the machine and some of the supplies for sale online if you cannot wait for it to come to a store near you.

My kind of Peace Sign

The other day I mentioned that my daughter is into items with Peace Signs on them, and anyone that knows me knows that I am into Mickey Mouse.  So what do you get when you combine the two?

PEACE

My daughter is very into anything with the Peace Sign on it right now, and we were looking online and found this.

This stained glass Peace Sign is the work of Good Grief Glass
This would look beautiful in my daughter's room once we paint it and she redecorates it in her Peace Theme.

First sewing project

My daughter, who will be turning 10 in June, has just started to show an interest in sewing.  Last week every night after dinner she was asking me for a "sewing lesson".  I walked her through the basic steps and then had her sew a straight line, zig zig, follow a curving line and sew in a circle.  Over the weekend she wanted to start in on her first real sewing project.  We decided to start with something simple . . . a pillowcase.  She is into anything with a Peace Sign on it, so I was not surprised when she said she wanted to find fabric with Peace Signs on it.

Hard at work on her first sewing project, a Peace Sign pillowcase.

The finished project!

She did a GREAT job!  Her seams were really straight and she was very careful the entire time.  She already has her next project planned out . . . pajamas with Peace/Love pants and a teal blue shirt.  Now that I have her sewing and scrapbooking I just have to show her how to blog about her own creations and she can take over!

Star Wars

We went to see an exhibit at the Science Museum that featured Star Wars.  It had the models of the different ships, and the displays of the costumes for us to look at.  I wanted to use lightsabers somehow in the layout, because those are such a big part of the entire Star Wars story.  Since I could not find stickers I ended creating my own lightsabers with my Cricut by making the sword from the Paper Dolls cartridge and the just rounding off the edges.

Here is how they turned out.

NASCAR

Here is something I know NOTHING about, but I had to create a scrapbook page about it for a memorial scrapbook I was doing . . . NASCAR.

I did black and white squares around the outside of the page, to look like the checked flag, and then orange was the main color to go with the Home Depot orange on the car.  Then I thought some nice orange flame paper accented everything very nice, along with the chipboard letters that spell out dad, since it was the father of this family that really liked NASCAR.

Wedding card box

Here is a wedding card box I made for my sister-in-law's bridal shower and wedding.

I found a shoe box where the top was hinged/connected to the bottom.  I wanted the top and bottom to be connected so that they would not get separated at the party or the wedding.  (I have kids, I know how those little people like to take the tops off of things and the they just disappear)

I covered the entire box in white fabric I had left over from making my wedding dress, and then covered the top in some padding to give it a fuller look before I put the white fabric with a subtle flower print over the top.  This was left over from one of my children's Baptism outfit.  I used white wire ribbon and flowers to decorate the top.

Here is a view looking straight down at the top of the box so you can see the bow and flowers better.

People told me how beautiful it was, and it was nice to know that I could create something beautiful out of a empty shoe box, left-over fabric some flowers and ribbon.  Also, when people talk about saving money on wedding items, I think back to this project . . . the only thing I bought was the ribbon and flower . . . I already had everything else.

Have you heard of ArtFire?

I stumbled across a site that is new to me, but maybe many of you are already aware of it, called ArtFire.  I created my profile page there this weekend.

ArtFire allows crafter so sell the items they create.  There are also forums, news and other ways for crafters to interact and share their creations with each other.  If you have not been to this site before, I would suggest checking it out.  Even if you don't want to sell YOUR creations online, it is a great place to get inspiration.

Good enough to eat!

I found this and just HAD to share it with all of you!

These beautiful slices of cake are the creation of The Embroider Shoppe.  I think that these would be a wonderful centerpiece at a birthday party or even a baby shower.  I have two nieces who both LOVE to pretend to cook and I know that they would both love to have these creations added to the collection of play food that they have.

They look good enough to eat!

Combine sewing and scrapbooking

I have seen some news that the new trend in scrapbooking is combining sewing element with your scrapbooking.  Some things would include using adhesive fabrics, or stictched elements on your cards and layouts.

Here are a few examples that I found

I love the button in the center of the flower above.  As someone who loves to sew and scrapbook, I see this as a way to combine two crafts that I love, and use up scraps of fabric or those random buttons that you have left over.

Also, If you have the Cricut Cartridge Simply Sweet, there is a stitched function on that cartridge.  It cuts a circle with the letter you choose in the center, and there is a sewing stitch line around the outside edge of the circle.

Spring break

It is that time of year.  The kids have a break from school and we are all ready to get out into some warmer weather and maybe hit a water park.  Here is a layout from a get-away that we took a few years ago.

I used paper that had a water feel to it running through the center of both pages, and then put the words "Catch a Wave" across it.  One page has pictures of the kids playing in the water park, and the other page has pictures of the "big kids" trying out the wave machine.

Happy Easter

Here is a scrapbook layout that I did from a couple of years ago.  I used my Cricut to cut out the letters to spell Happy Easter inside an oval/egg shape.

Washcloth bunnies

Have you ever seen washcloths folded to look like animals?  I think this would be a cute gift idea for an older child, especially if they are moving out on their own soon.  You would be giving them something they will need, but keeping in the fun spirit of Easter.

I found directions for making them here.

Or you can purchase pre-made ones.

These are also good for when a small child is hurt and you need to apply ice.  Just drop a couple of ice cubes inside the body of the bunny, and have the child hold it on the injury.
